A Solo Small Business Owner Building My Own Tools
I’ve been running a handmade jewelry shop on Etsy for over a decade. What started as a small hobby—selling a few handcrafted pieces—never really felt like a “business” at first. I simply made items when orders came in, shipped them out, and checked the numbers on Etsy. It was simple, and I didn’t think much about systems or structure.
As the shop grew, things became more complicated. The first real challenge was taxes. I found myself asking: How much did I actually sell? What was my real profit after fees, materials, and refunds?
Unfortunately, Etsy’s data alone wasn’t enough. So I went back and manually rebuilt everything—every order, every refund, every fee—in Excel.
It was exhausting.
The process took a huge amount of time, and I felt completely drained. Instead of focusing on growing my business, I was stuck doing repetitive manual work just to understand my numbers.
At the start of the next year, I made a decision.
I couldn’t keep running my business like this.
I needed a better way—a tool that actually worked for a small, one-person handmade business like mine.
That decision is what started this journey, MAKING MY OWN BIZ TOOLS.
